Reaching for Relief

       We are a group of six students from Flagler Palm Coast High School in the Community Problem Solving Program.

       Our project, Reaching For Relief, is creating comfort resources which are given to the families of patients in the hospital. Specifically focusing on critical areas of the hospital like the ICU, we distribute to families who are not prepared to stay overnight with their loved one. We have been partnered with the Pediatric and Neonatal Intensive Care Units (PICU and NICU). Many families often struggle to leave their loved ones or children alone at the hospital as they rush out to quickly gather supplies. We are striving to help relieve some of that stress by providing comfort resources with various overnight items that they may need, so that the burden of rushing out is no longer on their shoulders. We have partnered with the NASCAR Foundation and plan to work alongside them in the future.

       One of the provided comfort resources is overnight bags, which contain everyday necessities, like shampoos, conditioners, toothbrush, magazines, etc. We also provide local service lists placed in each waiting room which contains restaurants, transportation, lodging, spiritual services, and superstores closest to Halifax. By doing so, we hope to increase the families knowledge of their surroundings, so that unnecessary worry isn't an issue in the case that families don't know the area. Our team has also gathered electronic chargers to accommodate various devices. Reaching for Relief also seasonally decorates the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit every month. We have additionally, provided embroidered blankest for the Pediatrics and Neonatal ICU. In order to accommodate to the families potential lack of clothing for an unexpected overnight stay, we placed our team shirts in the waiting room department to be worn if needed.
